Mechanical Engineer Operations Job in Uganda

RVR is a transporting organization which provides both rail and marine services in the transportation of imports and export cargo. This leading transport organization is looking for a qualified, dedicated, self motivated individual to join the Mechanical Engineering team who will be required to travel along the various RVRU stations while executing his/her duty. MECHANICAL engineer OPERATIONS
REF: HR-MEC -1-09-2011

Reporting to the Rolling Stock Maintenance Manager - Uganda, you will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Manage locomotive, rolling stock, electrical installations, mechanical handling plant and equipment inspection, maintenance and repair programs, outside the workshops, and provide diagnostic and troubleshooting expertise in order to achieve equipment availability and reliability targets.-
  • Oversee the scheduling and execution of all work orders for assigned equipment including planned corrective and preventive maintenance.
  • Review daily reports to ensure all inspection and work order results are properly recorded in DMS (Depot maintenance schedules) with attention to conditions found, performance, measurements taken/ recorded, symptoms noted, and inspections completed and/or deferred.
  • Participate in Maintenance Effectiveness Reviews essential to the Reliability Centered Maintenance program and to lead implementation of related changes.
  • Manage and provide oversight of the day to day maintenance activities and budgets for the Mechanical Depots and Cranes. This would include overall production and quality of work being performed on all equipment. Material management and quality control.
  • Provide direction and Supervision to employees as well as managing the services and Operations of a multi-shift operation
  • Plan and superintend operations, inspection, testing, troubleshooting and repair of cranes, generators, pumps, trolleys, movable bridges and other installations, outside Nalukolongo workshops, in accordance with Maintenance Standards and Guidelines.
  • Direct work within the guidelines of the System Safety Program by being alert to physical hazards which affect operations, including the modification of, recognition or cessation of operations when conditions exist or could develop that would conflict with a safe operating environment for RVR and others.
  • Schedule human and material resources and direct their efficient use. Formulate and communicate specific goals through a chain of command. Provide direction and assistance to work groups to meet assigned objectives.
  • Oversee outsourced suppliers' compliance to design and/ or engineering projects ensuring they align with the business objectives. Plan, coordinate, direct, and provide PM (Project management) oversight of activities. 
  • Work closely with decision. makers in other departments to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support the delivery of cost-effective solutions.
  • Supervise and oversight of subordinate staff. Developing training, schedules’, accurate on-time performance reporting, recommending areas6f improvement; guiding, monitoring, and directing disciplinary actions in accordance with policies and procedures; ensure accurate record keeping; compliance with operating efficiency testing; development and implementation of both operating and personal safety plans.
  • Lead/support investigation, root cause identification and resolution of rolling stock & other equipment failures and incidents.
  • Ensure safe working environment in the work places in compliance with QHSE requirements.
  • Ensure quality of workmanship and product before delivery.
  • Provide operational support to the Rolling Stock Maintenance Manager - Uganda on all matters related to rolling stock maintenance (locomotive, wagon and coaches)
  • Perform administrative functions and other duties as assigned by the Rolling Stock Maintenance Manager - Uganda.
  • Carry out any other related duties that may be assigned by Management from time to time. 

Job requirement
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS 
The ideal candidate should have;

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university
  • Membership of the Institution of Professional Engineers
  • Maintenance Management Courses. 

PERSONAL ABILITIES

  • Must be conversant with statutory regulations covering mechanical engineering, employment legislation and industrial relations;
  • Computer knowledge including MS Word. MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and requisite soft ware programs
  • Understanding of railway operating regulations and safety requirements;
  • At least 8 years experience as a senior mechanical engineer and general management in the industry
  • Good organizational skills with good leadership, supervisory and training abilities
  • Ability to communicate across the organization
  • General Administrative & Coordinating skills
